The Benefits of Journaling and Creative Exploration: A look into the idea of creating a Junk Journal

Journaling is more than just writing down your thoughts—it's a powerful tool for self-expression, mental clarity, and personal growth. Whether you're looking to process emotions, unleash creativity, or simply reflect on your day, journaling offers a multitude of benefits.

Recently, our group embarked on a new journey with a weekly journaling class, and it’s been an eye-opening experience that has deepened our appreciation for this art form.

Why Journaling Is So Beneficial

  1. Mental Health Boost Journaling offers a safe space to unload your thoughts and emotions, especially when life feels overwhelming. Writing about challenges, fears, or even simple daily observations can help release pent-up emotions, reduce stress, and gain a fresh perspective on life. For many, it’s a therapeutic practice that brings calm and clarity.

  2. Self-Reflection and Growth One of the greatest benefits of journaling is the opportunity for self-reflection. Writing regularly can help you gain deeper insights into your actions, thoughts, and patterns, encouraging personal growth. It’s an ongoing conversation with yourself that can guide you on your journey toward self-awareness and change.

  3. A Boost of Creativity Journaling isn’t just about writing; it’s also about creating. The act of journaling allows you to tap into your creative potential. Whether it’s through doodles, sketches, or poetic expressions, your journal can be a space where your creativity flows freely—without the pressure of perfection. The unstructured nature of journaling invites spontaneous bursts of inspiration and innovative thinking.

  4. Tracking Goals and Progress Journals are an excellent way to set and track goals, both big and small. Whether it's a fitness goal, a personal project, or a long-term aspiration, journaling helps keep you focused and accountable. It's also a reminder of how far you've come when you look back at your entries.

  5. Stress Relief and Emotional Expression Life can get hectic, and sometimes the best way to process everything is to write it down. Journaling gives you a safe outlet to express your emotions—whether they’re positive, negative, or everything in between. It provides a sense of release, helping you navigate emotional ups and downs with greater ease.

Exploring making Junk Journals with Watercolor Paper Books

In our journaling class, we’ve been diving into the world of journals, some have even been bringing in junk journals. These are so creative and are like personal scrapbooks made from various repurposed materials—think old papers, magazine clippings, fabric, and other treasures. You can really make these pages out of anything you want like old library cards, your micro brew beer artistic labels that are beautifully designed or water color brushed paper.

These journals don’t have to follow any rigid structure, which is part of their charm.

One of our favorite additions to our junk journals has been the use of watercolor paper. This thick, textured paper is perfect for mixed media work, as it holds up well to paint, ink, and collaged elements without warping. Here’s why we love incorporating watercolor paper into our junk journals:

  • Durability and Texture: Watercolor paper’s thickness makes it ideal for layering materials. It holds paint, ink, and embellishments beautifully, adding a tactile quality to the pages.

  • Vibrant Color Play: Watercolor paper absorbs paint wonderfully, allowing you to create soft washes of color, vibrant backgrounds, or intricate details. It’s perfect for creating unique spreads that reflect your mood, thoughts, or artistic style.

  • Layering and Collage: Junk journals thrive on mixed materials. Watercolor paper allows you to combine elements like old postcards, fabric scraps, vintage receipts, and handwritten notes in a way that’s both creative and personal.

  • Artistic Freedom: Whether you’re blending watercolors, stamping, or simply adding texture through torn paper, watercolor paper gives you the freedom to experiment. You can create art without worrying about making it “perfect”—the imperfections are part of the beauty.

Incorporating Quotes for Inspiration

One of the most fulfilling aspects of junk journaling is the inclusion of quotes. Words are powerful, and incorporating meaningful quotes can transform your journal into a space for inspiration, reflection, and motivation. You can handwrite or print quotes on a variety of themes—love, growth, courage, or humor—and pair them with illustrations or colorful backgrounds. Quotes can serve as anchors to your journaling spreads, adding depth and context to your creative work.

Our Weekly Journaling Class: A New Creative Outlet

As a group, we recently started a journaling class on Wednesdays, and it’s been such a rewarding experience. Each week, we come together to explore new journaling prompts where we give ourselves the space to get out of our heads and onto the paper.

What we love most about the class is how it taps into our creative potential. It’s a chance to forget about perfection and just create freely, without any expectations. There’s something magical about the process of picking up a pen, and watching something unfold on the page. It’s a reminder that we can express ourselves in ways that feel authentic and liberating.

The journaling class has become an opportunity not just to improve our writing or art skills, but to engage with a community of like-minded individuals. Together, we’ve shared ideas, inspiration, and personal stories, building connections that go beyond the pages of our journals. We start the class by making little tables to lean on with our bolsters and blocks maybe taking a second to ground. We go through about five different prompts over time that take about five- 7 minutes each, maybe longer if need be. Sometimes we includes a poem or a haiku. Towards the end of class we add a bit of hand exercises to avoid him cramping hands. We usually end the class, listening to alchemy sound bowls for about 15 minutes.

Conclusion: The Power of Journaling

Whether you’re journaling for mental clarity, creativity, or personal growth, the benefits are vast and varied. It’s a practice that offers emotional release, boosts creativity, and fosters self-reflection. And when you add the tactile beauty of watercolor paper and the personal touch of quotes and collages, your journal becomes a unique expression of who you are.

For us, the weekly journaling class has been a wonderful reminder of the power of creativity and the importance of taking time for self-expression. We’re excited to continue our journaling journey, and we hope that you’ll consider starting one too—whether it’s a simple notebook, a junk journal, or something in between.

Happy journaling!
